A Hindu temple is a place of deity worship for Hindus. 'Temple' or 'devalaya' means 'house of the gods'. [1] A 'temple' is a building or place inspired by the ideals and religious symbols of Hinduism to bring people and gods together. [2] According to George Michel. , a Hindu temple is a spiritual center where people from the world of Maya come as pilgrims or pilgrims in search of the world of knowledge and truth.[1]

According to Stella Kramerisch,[2] the symbolism and architecture of Hindu temples is rooted in the Vedic tradition. All concepts of Hindu cosmology can be found within a temple. In this, along with the good, evil and human aspects, the Hindu concept of Kalachakra and Purushartha, everything is expressed through symbols. Philosophical concepts of Dharma, Kama, Artha, Moksha, Karma and Bhakti are also present in the temple through symbols.[3][4]

Spiritual ideals represented through symbols in Hindu temples are found in the ancient Sanskrit scriptures of India (eg, Vedas, Upanishads, etc.). On the other hand, how a temple should be structured is described in architectural Sanskrit texts (eg Brihatsamhita, Vastushastra, etc.). reflecting one's own beliefs and values.[2] Hindu temples are spiritual destinations for Hindus. In addition, ancient art, community festivals and regional commercial centers developed around the temples.[7][8]

There are differences in the structure and construction style of temples by region and community. [9] Nevertheless, Hindu temples share some common basic concepts, symbolism, and thematic similarities. Temples are most abundant in South Asia (mainly India and Nepal) and Southeast Asian countries (mainly Cambodia, Vietnam, the Indonesian archipelago and Malaysia).[10][11] Fiji, Mauritius, Guyana, Suriname, South Africa, Europe and North Many temples have also been built in the Americas, where the Hindu population is significant. [12] The current state and appearance of Hindu temples reflects a mixture of Hindu art that has evolved over several millennia. The conflict between Hinduism and Islam since the 12th century AD has also had an impact on Hindu temples.[13]

Some of the notable Hindu temples are Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Chardham Mandir-Chatustai (Puri Jagannath Temple, Ramanathswamy Temple, Dwarkadhish Temple, and Badrinath Temple), Chhota Chardham Mandir-Chatustai (Badrinath Temple, Kedarnath Temple, Gangotri, Yamunotri), Jyotirlinga Temples, 51 Shaktipeeth Temples, Tirupati Balaji Temple, Kamakhya Temple etc. Some of the famous temples in the state of West Bengal are Kalighat Temple, Dakshineswar Temple, Belur Math, Tarapeeth Temple, Tarakeswar Temple etc. A famous temple in Bangladesh is Dhakeshwari temple.
